The son of emigrants Peter M. Maas and Suzanne (Giesson) Maas, Nicholas Maas married Blanche Eugenie Cady around 1900. They lived at 682 W. Lake Ave. in Barberton, Ohio and raised four children there:

Theresa Mildred, born 1903,

Lawrence, born 1905,

Paul, born 1908,

Carl Eugene, born 1911.

Nick was, by trade, a machinist at the Babcock & Wilcox Co., (B & W) in Barberton. Their primary work was the manufacturing of steam boilers for ships. However, they did fill an unusual order during World War II. They lined several brand new army tanks with lead. When completed, the tanks were loaded aboard flatbed rail cars and left Barberton under cover of night. Following the detonation of the first atomic bomb at the Trinity Test site in New Mexico, these tanks were used to carry men into the blast crater. While working as a machinist, Nick was blinded in one eye when a steel shaving entered it. He was about to be fired when his co-workers requested that he be promoted to a supervisory position. He was and his first assignment was to increase the department's productivity. He noticed right off that his workers were spending a huge amount of time in the restrooms. He drove finishing nails into all the toilet seats, with only the tips sticking out, rendering them serviceable but most uncomfortable. He had accomplished his first assignment in the first hour of his new job. While visiting Blanche's sister in Pittsburgh in 1947, Nick suffered a heart attack while walking the hilly streets. He returned home and survived only another few months until his death.
